Despite the Ohio having a 17-point halftime lead, the Ohio men's basketball team could not hold off a second-half surge by the opposition, falling to Tulsa 90-88, on Friday (Nov. 20) in their opening game of the 2015 U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. However they were able to knock the opposition (Norfolk State) in their second game of the 2015 U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam 93-71. It was the Terriers of Wofford who edged the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore 73-63, pulling away at the very end despite the Hawks’ solid inside game and high shooting percentage. Freshman guard Ahmad Frost made his second start of the season scoring p points shooting 3-4 from the field in 20 minutes of play. UMES will play their final game of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic and their home opener on Tuesday against Fairfield.
After a very hot start to the seasoning scoring 18 and 19 in his first two games, freshman guard Elijah Pughsley couldn’t manage to make a field goal against High Point. He was 0-7 from the field (0-6 from 3) as WCU dropped to High Point. Pughsley and WCU are back at home tomorrow and take on Hiwassee.
In both games this past week sophomore guard, Angel Rivera, led his team in assist. In their first game with less than 10 second remaining in the game Rivera’s teammate floater from six feet was blocked, and he (Angel Rivera) rebounded in the lane but missed a put-back and The Citadel eventually came out victorious with a 94-93 victory over Stetson. Be Good At What You Do A lot

5/27/2015

Things you will probably do a lot with your players/team

 1) REBOUND:  Over the course of a game, we have 550-600 rebound chances…

2) CLOSE OUT: No matter what defense you play, you will do this A LOT!!

3) TRANSITION DEFENSE: % wise you are in transition D more than 1/2 court

4) DEFEND PENETRATION: Every offense relies on ability to break you down

5) DEFEND BALL SCREENS: Few games pass without having to defend these

Things coaches need to do to improve ourselves

 1) READ:  “The man who chooses not to read is no different from the man who can NOT read”.  You MUST make time to read.  It’s the only way to gain experience.  It’s the only way you will catch up to coaches who have more experience than you.

2) WRITE:  When you put your thoughts on paper and in ink, they be come yours.  Your words become your philosophy.  If you have every  “in your head” it’s not stated.  And until you STATE them, it’s simply not yours.  Choose a simple topic… Rebounding… Write out your thoughts.  You will be surprised how much thinking you will do on it before you are willing to share with someone else!!

3) OBSERVE: Go to clinics.  Go to camps, work camps. Attend practices.  Watch DVD’s.  Go on-line and use YOUTUBE or VIMEO.  You can spend hours on hours. I want to get new ideas everyday!  Again you are making the choice to or NOT to learn from others.  If you already KNOW IT ALL, let me know so I can come observe YOU!!

4) REACH OUT:  There are so many resources out there.  If you aren’t  reaching out to others, you are losing ground to those who do.   There are coaches all over the country willing to share.  There are blogs.  There are Newsletters.  There are YOUTUBE channels.  All with coaches willing to give back what others have shared with  them.  As Don Meyer shares “collect all the good ideas whether you  use them OR not”.

Sign up for my weekly newsletter - http://www.secondhalfathletes.com/newsletter.html

5) RISK: It takes a lot of courage to be a coach.  Don’t settle for the status quo.  You must be willing to put yourself “out there” to grow.  It’s not easy.  You will have some haters.  But that’s exactly what you are teaching your players.  Model it for them.

Guards Teaching Points

When working with guards I always keep a few teaching points and skill emphasis:

1. Jab steps create separation.

2. Teach the shot fake when defender is closing out.

3. Kyrie Erving has a great change of speed and get by defenders. Very tight handle.

4. Rip Hamilton had a great change of speed off the ball, he would sprint, stop then sprint again to get open.

5. Creating great cuts off post entry. When possible, throw overhead pass into the post to get defenders hands high then sprint cut for a good chance to get open.

6. Come off screens shoulder to hip of screener.

7 learn to use screener twice on all screens even grabbing the arm of screener.

8. The best guards are the guys who do the little things.

9. Have multi finishers around the around.

10. Never know when there will be a mismatch - develope a post game!

Just A Reminder

Sometimes we just need to be reminded so do our players. Billy Graham once said, "one coach will impact more young people in a year than the average person does in a lifetime."

With that in mind as coaches we need to give our players constant reminders. Reminders that they are on the right track. Reminders that they are fighting fights that matter. Reminders to keep up the good work and not to waste chances.

Sometimes we just need to be reminded.

The guy that basically has the best judgement, decision-making, doing what ever needs to be done for the team. The guy with the ability to learn, willingness to improve with a great work ethic. He is unpredictable, a coach on the floor and knows what his teammates can and cannot do… that's your point guard.

Other Characteristics of a point guard include:
1. Communication - Talk on and off the court, often. Calls out names and gives constant reminders to teammates.
2. Attitude - Positive and productive attitude (PPA).
3. Leadership - Has the ability to affect those around them and leads by example.
4. High Skill Level - Can put all the pieces together, has the ability to go from dribble to shot or pass quickly.
5. IQ - Knows what they can and cannot do; know what teammate can and cannot do. Tenacious and has a motor.

"You can't be a point guard who gets into the lane and always passes. Capitalize on the real estate you have gained."
"Point Guard must be able to pass with both hands equally off the dribble."
"You should always want your coach to be critical. It gives you an opportunity to learn and to over-come adversity."

Skill Development Thoughts

Six components to effective skill development

· Practice at a rate faster than or equal to a game
· Understand that improvement is a process
o Need effective practice and must be in condition
· Eliminate work-out killers: fatigue and boredom
· Have a written work-out plan
· Work on 3 areas everyday: conditioning, dribbling, shooting
·Theory of “2”
o Coach can show any skill in 2 minutes
o 2 weeks before player is comfortable with the skill (working every day)
o 2 months before player is ready to use skill in competition (working every day)

4 MUST-haves in a workout

· Weak hand development
· Footwork and balance
· Practice playing through contact (dribbling and shooting)
· Practice shooting while contested – work on concentration / focus on rim and release
    o Simple hand-up contest
o Foul just after or on release

6 Fundamentals of a Shooting Work-out

· Catch and shoot
· Cut, catch and shoot
· Shots off the dribble
· Perfect form in all shooting drills – feet / keep follow thorough until ball hits the rim
· Contesting shots
· Game shots from game spots at game speed

Coach K's key concepts to Motion Offense

4/19/2015

Picture

When you pass, move but don't follow your pass

Don't make two simultaneous cuts into the same area (spacing)

Call out the name of the player screening for (communication)

Catch and face, hold for a 2 count unless you have a good scoring opportunity right away

Don't pass too quickly

If a screener's back is to you, hold to see what develops

15-18 feet spacing on perimeter

Keep the ball off the baseline unless a scoring opportunity is available

If a single post has a scoring opportunity don't go there

Dribble only to advance the ball, improve a passing angle, go to the basket, balance the floor, or get out of trouble (no wasted dribbles)
